Sherwood Forest in now a small remnant of an actual larger royal hunting forest in Nottinghamshire, the name derived from shire wood. The forest is now a mere 1045 acres, the original size is unknown, but it did extend into several neighboring shires. Our Shiercliffe family had the position of Master of the Game, or Keeper of the Game, thought to prevent the theft of the King's deer in neighboring Sherwood Forest, a 29 mile difference now. Add the nearby town of Loxley and you have a full fledged legend.
